The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) on Tuesday, 16th September 2025, hosted an engaging lecture at its Main Campus in Mbale under the theme “The Islamic Golden Age: The Legacy of Muslim Polymaths as Pioneers of Science and Civilisation.”

The lecture, delivered by Dr. AbdulSwamad Gyagenda, a lecturer in the Department of Islamic Studies and Deputy Director, Research, Publication and Innovation, who explored the immense contributions of Muslim scholars during the Golden Age (8th–13th centuries).

Dr. AbdulSwamad highlighted how centres such as the Baitul Hikmah (House of Wisdom) in Baghdad became hubs of knowledge, where Muslim polymaths like Ibn Sina, Al-Razi, Al-Khawarizmi, and Ibn Haytham advanced medicine, mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, and philosophy. He explained that their groundbreaking discoveries laid the foundation for modern science and civilisation.

“Muslims once dominated the world of knowledge and innovation, building canals, inventing surgical tools, advancing mathematics, and shaping astronomy, all under the spirit of Islam and Qur’anic reflection,” he said.

The lecture, organised by the IUIU Dawah Secretariat, brought together students from various faculties, including Islamic Studies, Health Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences, and Education, with the purpose of inspiring, learning, and reflecting on the timeless contributions of Muslim scholars to science and human progress.
