The Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana has launched its 75th anniversary celebrations to honour its enduring contributions to sociological research, teaching and policy engagement in Ghana and across the world.
The launch, held under the theme “75 Years of Institutionalised Sociological Inquiry in Ghana,” brought together current and former faculty, staff, students, alumni and members of the university community for a memorable gathering at the Department’s forecourt.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Provost of the College of Humanities, Professor Joseph Awetori Yaro, praised the Department for its pioneering role in shaping generations of sociologists and social science professionals. He highlighted the Department’s contribution to the University’s vision of academic excellence and its relevance in addressing national and global development challenges.
Delivering the keynote address, Guest Speaker Professor Clara Korkor Fayorsey, Dean of the African Leadership Institute and a former Head of the Department, encouraged the community to reflect on its rich legacy while forging ahead with purpose.
She underscored the importance of sociological perspectives in navigating contemporary social issues and urged the Department to produce more actionable, locally grounded research that informs public policy and societal change.
The 75th anniversary will be marked with a series of academic and commemorative activities throughout June and July, culminating in a grand event in August 2025.
The celebration also aligns with the University of Ghana’s strategic objectives of promoting a transformative student experience, impactful research and institutional engagement.

As one of the University’s oldest and most impactful academic units, the Department of Sociology continues to shape public discourse, influence policy and inspire a new generation of thinkers committed to social transformation.
