{"id":1543,"date":"2026-02-06T13:12:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T13:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whedafrica.org\/?p=1543"},"modified":"2026-02-09T13:13:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T13:13:17","slug":"kiu-bridges-gap-in-medical-technology-with-key-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whedafrica.org\/index.php\/2026\/02\/06\/kiu-bridges-gap-in-medical-technology-with-key-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"KIU Bridges Gap in Medical Technology with Key Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartie.kiu.ac.ug\/public\/assets\/images\/news\/1770387165_91baac5e46cdf0ae1797.jpeg\" alt=\"kiu-bridges-gap-in-medical-technology-with-key-lecture\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>KIU, Western Campus<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; In an effort to promote awareness and understanding of medical technology, the Directorate of Research Innovation Consultancy and Extension (DRICE), in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Kampala International University&#8217;s Western Campus (KIU-WC), organized a public lecture themed&nbsp;<strong><em>&#8220;Bridging the Gap: Building Trust and Confidence in Medical Technology,&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;with a sub theme&nbsp;<strong><em>\u201cDemystifying Medical Equipment: Understanding and Addressing Public Fears and Concerns\u201d<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event, which took place on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Staff Common Room, brought together the university staff, students, and the general public to discuss the pressing issue of medical equipment and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delivering his welcoming remarks, Prof. Aja Patrick Maduabuchi, Director of RICE, highlighted the lecture&#8217;s significance, stating, &#8220;We are gathered here today to discuss matters that are beneficial to the public, and we believe that this lecture will shed light on the significance of medical technology in our lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartie.kiu.ac.ug\/public\/assets\/website\/media\/images\/1770389034_71c24b318d0974a1ac6e.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Ibrahim Babangida Abubakar, Assistant DVC &#8211; Academics &amp; Research, represented Assoc. Prof. Eric Mabonga, Deputy Vice Chancellor of KIU-WC, and highlighted the university&#8217;s focus on research and community service, stating that such lectures address issues relevant to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his compelling address, Awafung Emmanuel Adie (PhD), a Biomedical Engineer, Lecturer, and Researcher, highlighted the need for patients to be proactive in their healthcare. &#8220;While medical technology has transformed healthcare, making diagnosis faster and treatment more precise, many people still feel anxious about unfamiliar equipment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlighting concerns about medical equipment, Dr. Adie tackled fears around radiation exposure and pain, stressing the importance of understanding safety, innovation, and oversight. &#8220;You can trust medical devices today and look forward to Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations tomorrow, both designed with your wellbeing as the top priority,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartie.kiu.ac.ug\/public\/assets\/website\/media\/images\/1770640376_5b168fc160699fee4547.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Adie further explored the future of medical technology, where AI plays a transformative role: &#8220;AI-powered devices can detect patterns invisible to the human eye, predict complications before they occur, and personalize treatment plans based on vast datasets.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized the importance of patients asking questions and seeking clarity from their healthcare providers. &#8220;Your healthcare team is your partner,&#8221; Dr. Adie said. &#8220;Never hesitate to ask questions, and understand how medical equipment works to empower yourself to make informed decisions about your care.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event concluded with an award ceremony honoring Dr. Adie, followed by a group photograph.
