The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has officially launched its PhD in Law program, following approval from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), marking a significant milestone for the institution’s Faculty of Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking in an interview from the IUIU main campus, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Abdullateef Wale Adeyemo, confirmed that the program has been accredited by the National Council for Higher Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re grateful the program has finally been approved,\u201d Dr. Adeyemo said. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge step forward for legal education in Uganda and the university as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Dean, the PhD in Law is tailored to be both intensive and practical, running for three years on a full-time basis and five years for part-time students. The first year is dedicated to coursework, covering areas such as research methodology, legal writing, data analysis, human rights, Islamic law, and energy law. Students then transition into the research phase, where they work closely with assigned supervisors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Admission to the program requires a Master of Laws (LL.M). However, candidates with a master\u2019s degree in another discipline may also be considered if they hold a bachelor\u2019s degree in law (LL.B). Applicants must submit two academic reference letters and a sample of legal writing to demonstrate their research potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond academics, students will engage in teaching practice, legal clinics, community outreach, and seminar presentations. A key graduation requirement includes publishing at least two articles in peer-reviewed journals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Adeyemo noted that the program\u2019s international outlook also sets it apart. \u201cWe have over 20 memoranda of understanding with universities across Africa and beyond,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis allows for exchange programs and visiting lectureships that enrich the academic experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the approval now in place, the university has opened applications and is inviting prospective candidates to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
