{"id":1271,"date":"2025-04-25T11:02:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T11:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whedafrica.org\/?p=1271"},"modified":"2025-05-03T11:07:42","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T11:07:42","slug":"chancellor-welcomes-new-ug-council-chair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whedafrica.org\/index.php\/2025\/04\/25\/chancellor-welcomes-new-ug-council-chair\/","title":{"rendered":"Chancellor Welcomes New UG Council Chair"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ug.edu.gh\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-04\/261A5310.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, has officially welcomed the newly appointed Chair of the University of Ghana Governing Council, Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew and expressed confidence in her ability to lead the Council in advancing the University\u2019s mission and global aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brief introduction ceremony was held at her residence following the successful inauguration of the Council by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, introduced Ms. Brew to the Chancellor, noting that she had been appointed along with four other government appointees to the reconstituted Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a healthy mix of new members from diverse professional and academic backgrounds to help steer the affairs of the University,\u201d the Vice-Chancellor said. \u201cIt is proper and timely as the University continues its path of transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ug.edu.gh\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/261A5297.jpg\" alt=\"Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Amfo thanked the Chancellor for her continuous support over the years, acknowledging her availability and commitment to providing guidance when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do not take for granted the critical role you play in our collective efforts to keep this University progressive. Your presence and wise counsel have been a constant encouragement,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She emphasised the important role the Council plays in shaping the University\u2019s outcomes, particularly in the training of undergraduate and graduate students. \u201cThere are ongoing significant efforts to improve our academic programmes and co-curricular activities, all aimed at equipping students to meet the expectations of industry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew expressed gratitude for the trust reposed in her and the new Council. She pledged to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the University of Ghana achieves its strategic objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ug.edu.gh\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/261A5276.jpg\" alt=\"Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe charge from the Honourable Minister for Education has given us a clear direction to work hard and support the University to achieve its goals and produce quality graduates who can transform society,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She reiterated the commitment of the government and its appointees not to interfere with the operations of the University, stressing the need for unity of purpose. \u201cTeamwork will be paramount. We are here to contribute, not to interfere,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Brew assured the Chancellor of her resolve to work closely with University Management and fellow Council members to ensure UG attains global impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding to the remarks, Chancellor Mary Chinery-Hesse noted that the new Chair had inherited \u201ca fantastic team\u201d and expressed confidence in their ability to continue advancing the University\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ug.edu.gh\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/261A5274.jpg\" alt=\"Chancellor Mary Chinery-Hesse\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>Chancellor Mary Chinery-Hesse<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou bring a wealth of experience and expertise and I am confident that you and your team will offer strong leadership to guide this University to greater heights,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She congratulated Ms. Brew on her appointment and commended the outgoing Council for their commitment and significant contributions that have helped redefine UG\u2019s strategic direction and achievements on the African higher education landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chancellor pledged her continued support to the Council, Vice-Chancellor and Registrar in the management and administration of the University.
